Special Event: Lost Rhino/Hubner-Stein Collaboration Release Party

Dear Brewers,

Brewery collaborations are all the rage these days, and Lost Rhino in Ashburn, VA is no exception….with one big exception. Their most recent release, The Wandering Belgian, is a collaboration not with another brewery, but with two local homebrewers: Mike Stein (of DCBeer.com notoriety) and myself, Joshua Hubner (of periodic email sending notoriety).

A little bit about the beer: The Wandering Belgian is a hybrid style beer; part Belgian Strong Ale (BJCP 18), part American IPA (BJCP 14B), made with pils malt, amber candi syrup, Hallertau, Columbus, Saaz and Cascade hops (kettle, hop back, and dry hop additions), and a Belgian yeast strain with prominent fruit and spice notes. The Wandering Belgian is strong and aggressive, while still being refined and subtle. Those few who’ve sampled the brew have exclaimed, “This beer could cure the future!”

Intrigued? Next Wednesday, October 17, the good folks at Smoke & Barrel will be hosting the D.C. release party for the Wandering Belgian starting at 5pm. From 5-8pm they’ll have Wandering Belgian and four other Lost Rhino brews on tap for $5 (it’s also half price sandwich night if you get hungry)!

Mike and I will be there to join you in the festivities, and we’ll buy pints for the first five DC Homebrewers to correctly guess the yeast strain. No joke.

This has been a long time in the making, and we are proud to be able to serve our beer on tap in DC. We hope you’ll join us!

Wednesday, October 17 at 5pm, Smoke & Barrel, 2471 18th St. NW.

Cheers,

Joshua Hubner

October Meeting Announcement (Tuesday 10-23-12)

Dear Brewers,

The bad news is that Oktoberfest is over [sigh]. The good news is October’s DC Homebrewers Club meeting is just around the corner [insert applause].

Our host this month is The District Chophouse & Brewery, and their head brewer, Barrett Lauer. They are located in Chinatown, 509 7th St N.W. in between the Crime and Punishment museum and Iron Horse Taproom. Check out Barrett’s bio here: http://districtchophouse.com/view/our-story/index.html. You can also find him on twitter @ChopHouseBrew.

THE DETAILS:

The meeting will be held on Tuesday, October 23, 2012 at 7pm. Barrett will be on hand to give tours of the brewery, and we’ll have the upstairs loft to ourselves to share our homebrew (bring homebrew if you can, if you don’t have any to share, don’t let that stop you!)

NOTE: Because we are meeting at a restaurant, please do not bring commercial beers or food to the Chophouse. They have great beers on tap as well as food available for purchase at the bar. Thanks!

Hope to see you all there. We had a number of new faces last month at Martin’s, so if you’ve been on the fence about coming to a meeting, this is a great opportunity to check us out.

OTHER NEWS:

Mark your calendars for Saturday November 3, 2012 for National “Learn to Homebrew Day” which we will be hosting at 3 Stars Brewing Co. & Homebrew Store at 10am. We’ll brew an all grain beer and an extract beer from start to finish with plenty of step-by-step detail. Interested? More details are coming soon.

Also, DCHB will hold it’s annual organizational meeting early this year (later this month or early November). If you’ve wanted to get more involved with the club’s events and intricate workings, keep your ears open, date to be announced shortly…

Cheers,

Joshua Hubner

White House Homebrew Recipe Released

Dear Brewers,
We did it. We made our voices heard, and we got the President’s ear. Yesterday, the White House officially released the recipes for it’s homebrewed beers: https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/petition/release-recipe-honey-ale-home-brewed-white-house/XkpkYwc0

This petition was started by our very own DCHB member, John Lutz, after a hearty discussion on our facebook page about how best to go about getting info on the recipe and the White House brewing setup. Thank you John, we owe you a pint!

Also, thanks to everyone who emailed, called, tweeted, and smoke signaled about the petition. The number and quality of news outlets that picked up this story is truly encouraging.

Thank you all for being a part of arguably the best homebrewers club on the planet.

Cheers,
Joshua Hubner

Petition the White House to Release their Homebrew Recipe

Dear Brewers,

With the 2012 election heating up, it’s important to make your voice heard. Regardless of which way you vote this November, you now have the chance to cast the most important vote of your lifetime…as a homebrewer.

This petition was started by one of your fellow members of D.C. Homebrewers Club, John L. Please sign it, tweet it, facebook it, email it to your grandma:

https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/petition/release-recipe-honey-ale-home-brewed-white-house/XkpkYwc0

[The petition will ask you to create an account, but you can opt out of getting emailed. They just need to confirm that you aren't spam.]

It’s not everyday that homebrewers get a voice on the national stage. Right now that’s happening. If we can get this done, there is no telling what we can do next.

Thank you for your support!

Cheers,

Upcoming Competitions Reminder

Dear Brewers,
As mentioned at the last meeting, we have a few competitions coming
up for you to participate in. The DC State Fair, Oliver Ale’s Homebrew
Competition, and our in-house competition for the August meeting:

1) DC STATE FAIR:

Registration for the DC State Fair Homebrew Competition is now open to
DC residents!

Brew and enter a beer (with extra points for homegrown hops and
ingredients) in one of five categories to win prizes and show your
beer-brewing credentials. The top beers in each of the five categories
will win prizes and move on to the final round with the grand prize
going to the entry taking best of show. Unlike some other homebrew
competitions, only three bottles total are required for each entry -
so you’ll still have plenty of bottles of your prized entry left to
enjoy!

Registered entries can be dropped off at Meridian Pint between Monday,
September 3, and Friday, September 14
.

Judging will take place on Monday, September 17.

Register your beer for the competition today!

2) OLIVER ALE’S COMPETITION:

Oliver Ale’s upcoming homebrew competition details: (http://
www.prattstreetalehouse.com/2012/06/the-fall-homebrew-competition) Entries are now due by Saturday, August 18th at 3 Stars Homebrew Shop.

3) DCHB IN HOUSE COMP:

As we did last month with the Porter competition, this month’s in-
house homebrew competition will determine the Club’s entry into the
AHA sponsored Club-only competition. Entries (3 bottles, any size) are
to be brought to the August meeting (date to be released shortly, 3d
week of August). The style is BJCP 6: Light Hybrid Beer (Cream Ale,
Blonde Ale, Kolsch, America Wheat or Rye).

Happy Brewing!

July Meeting Details (updated 7.19.12)

Dear Brewers,

Just a friendly reminder about this Thursday’s meeting, with some more details and tidbits.

Back in May we learned that D.C. was getting it’s very own homebrew shop, courtesy of the good folks at 3 Stars Brewing Co., Dave Coleman and Mike McGarvey. Since then, they’ve crossed all the t’s and dotted all the i’s, and have fired up their brew kettles, making them the third production brewery to open in D.C. in the past 15 months. Check them out at www.3StarsBrewing.com

Dave and Mike have invited you all to share in the excitement by volunteering to host this month’s DCHB meeting at their brewery in Takoma!

The meeting will be held on Thursday July, 19, 2012 at 7pm.

3 Stars Brewing Co. & Homebrew Shop is located at 6400 Chillum Pl. NW, Washington, D.C. The closest Metro station is Takoma Park on the Red Line.

*From the Metro, exit towards Cedar St. NW, then turn right (walking underneath the Metro tracks). This will take you to the intersection of Cedar, Blair and 4th St. Turn left to walk south on Blair Rd. NW. Follow Blair Rd. south until you intersect with Kansas Ave. NW (approximately 7 minutes). Turn left on Kansas and then make your first left onto Chillum Pl. NW. 3 Stars is a 3 minute walk up Chillum Pl. on the left side.

*DONT FORGET TO BRING YOUR BOTTLES OF HOMEBREWED PORTER FOR THE COMPETITION

*If you are not competing, just bring whatever homebrew you can spare, some snack to go with the BBQ, or some craft beer to share. Of course, you are not required to bring anything, just a desire to enjoy and share in the spirit of homebrew!

*There is street parking near the brewery, but it is limited. Look for this: http://twitpic.com/9×5e1x

We’ll have an opportunity to check out their operation first hand, and the homebrew shop will be open for all those last minute purchases for weekend brewing.

*Dave and Mike will extend a 10% discount on all purchases made at the store (they are open starting at 4pm).

All the other meeting details are the same, with a Porter demonstration and brief lecture at 7:15pm followed by introduction and enjoyment of everyone’s home brewed beers. For more details about meetings, check out:http://www.dchomebrewers.com/?page_id=2

*Bonus: Logan from Smoke & Barrel will be manning the grills out front and will have tasty grilled meats for purchase! http://smokeandbarreldc.com/

*We’ll also have announcements about the Pig Roast (8-4-12), the Oliver Ale’s upcoming homebrew competition (http://www.prattstreetalehouse.com/2012/06/the-fall-homebrew-competition/), the DC “State” Fair Competition, and more!

This should be a great meeting, many thanks to Dave and Mike for their hospitality!

Cheers,

Joshua Hubner, el presidente

All-Grain Education Event this Saturday at Smith Commons

Dear Brewers,

Join DC Homebrewers Club this Saturday at Smith Commons (1245 H St. NE) from 1-7pm, for the Back Porch Brew Part Deux. This is the second installment of the educational all-grain brewing series, where we will be brewing an India Pale Ale (IPA) from start to finish. We will be walking participants of all experience levels through the ingredients and brew process step-by-step, highlighting the chemistry and art of creating great beer as well as discussing the hotly debated origins of this well-known beer style.

Join us on the back porch for an afternoon of brewing, where professionals and home brewers will be on hand to discuss various techniques, tips, and methods of creating delicious brews. 3 Stars Brewing Company headbrewer Mike McGarvey will also be in attendance to speak about the new brewery, homebrew shop, and talk about the DC beer scene. There will also be food and drink specials, rare and hard to find bottles, and samples of the Common Farm House Saison from our first installment.

Come out and get some rarities while they last! Our friends from the DC Homebrew Shop and Soap Boy Fresh will be on hand with some awesome gear. Also, Uber will be giving away two $50 gift cards so that you can ride in style! We’re happy to offer first time Uber riders attending Saturday’s event $10 off your first ride! Use the promo code uberjustjp at uber.com or in the Uber iPhone/Android app to receive your discounted ride.

If the first Back Porch Brew is any indication, this Saturday will be a great day of brewing in the sun.

Cheers!
